Best Cars for Learner Drivers in Australia (2026)

Your first car needs to be safe above all else. New drivers are statistically more likely to be involved in crashes. Here are the best options that combine 5-star safety with low insurance and running costs.

What Matters for Learner/P-Plate Drivers

  • Safety (non-negotiable). 5-star ANCAP with AEB. This is the #1 priority. AEB alone prevents or mitigates 38% of rear-end crashes.
  • Insurance cost. under-25 drivers pay 2-3x more. Small, low-powered cars are cheapest to insure.
  • Power restrictions. P-platers in most states can't drive turbo or V8 vehicles. Check your state's power-to-weight restrictions.
  • Running costs. fuel, servicing, tyres. You're likely on a tight budget.
  • Visibility. good all-round vision helps new drivers avoid crashes.

Best New Cars for Learners (Under $30k)

1. Toyota Yaris, From $23,300

5-star ANCAP, 4.8L/100km (hybrid), Toyota reliability. The Yaris is small and easy to park, cheap to fuel, and cheap to insure. It's boring. and that's exactly what a first car should be.

2. Suzuki Swift, From $22,490

Fun to drive, cheap to run (4.6L/100km), and light enough to be nimble in traffic. The Swift has been a learner favourite for years. Good visibility and small dimensions make it easy to park.

3. Kia Picanto, From $19,490

The cheapest new car in Australia with a 7-year warranty. Running costs are the lowest on this list. The trade-off: 4-star ANCAP and limited space. But for solo commuting, it's hard to beat the value.

4. MG MG3, From $18,990

The cheapest car with 5-star ANCAP. Apple CarPlay, reversing camera, and AEB standard. The MG3 is the best-value safe option for budget-conscious learners.

5. Hyundai Venue, From $26,500

If you want an SUV seating position (better visibility), the Venue is the cheapest 5-star option. Higher insurance than hatchbacks but still reasonable for under-25s.

Best Used Cars for Learners ($10-20k)

  • Toyota Corolla (2018-2022). 5-star ANCAP, excellent reliability, cheap to service. The default safe choice.
  • Mazda3 (2019-2022). better to drive than the Corolla, similar safety. Slightly higher insurance.
  • Hyundai i30 (2018-2022). great value, 5-star ANCAP, good warranty remaining if under 5 years old.
  • Suzuki Vitara (2019-2022). small SUV, cheap to run, AWD available. Good first SUV.

Cars to Avoid as a Learner

  • Anything without AEB. pre-2018 cars often lack this. It's the single most important safety feature.
  • High-powered cars. besides P-plate restrictions, powerful cars are expensive to insure and more dangerous in inexperienced hands.
  • Very old cars. a 2010 car rated 5 stars was tested against 2010 standards. Modern safety tech has advanced enormously.
  • Large SUVs/utes. harder to park, harder to judge dimensions, more expensive to run.

Insurance Tips for Young Drivers

  • Get quotes BEFORE buying. the car you love might cost $4,000/year to insure
  • Named driver on parents' policy is often cheaper than your own policy
  • Higher excess = lower premium (but make sure you can afford the excess)
  • Install a dashcam. some insurers offer discounts
  • Park in a garage or off-street if possible
