Privacy Policy

We collect minimal data necessary to provide our services:

• Account Information: Email address when you create an account
• Comparison Data: Cars you add to comparison lists (stored locally and optionally synced)
• Usage Data: Anonymous, aggregate analytics on page views, time on page, comparisons, searches and tool use — stitched only within a single visit by a temporary in-tab token, never a persistent identifier (see Anonymous Usage Analytics below). We also use Vercel Analytics.
• Anonymous Usage Patterns: Aggregate, non-identifying signals about how the site is used — for example which cars are compared or viewed, what is searched, and which tools are used — so we can improve the site (see below)
• Device Information: Browser type, device type, and IP address for security purposes

To understand what visitors find useful and to improve CarSorted, we record anonymous, aggregate signals about how the site is used — such as which cars are compared or viewed, what is searched, which calculators and tools are used, which pages are visited, how long is spent on a page, and which on-screen elements (for example a comparison’s spec sections) are opened.

This data is fully anonymous. It does not include, and is never linked to:

• Your name, email, or any personal information
• Your IP address (it is used only briefly to prevent abuse, then discarded — never stored)
• Your account, or any persistent, cross-site or cross-device identifier
• Any fingerprinting, or profiling of you as an individual

Understanding a single visit. So we can see a visit as a journey (for example, which pages you moved between, or the comparison you built), we generate a random, temporary session token that lives only in your browser tab’s memory and is erased the moment you close the tab. It is not a cookie, contains no personal information, is never stored against an account, and is never used to recognise you on a later visit, on another device, or on another website.

We store only the type of action, the page path, and a broad device category (mobile, tablet or desktop). Because none of it is tied to a lasting identifier, it cannot be used to identify you. Any insight we publish or share is reported strictly in aggregate, and is suppressed unless it reflects at least 25 separate visits — so no small group of people can ever be re-identified.

Your data is stored securely using Supabase, a secure database platform with:

• Encryption at rest and in transit
• Row-level security policies
• Regular security audits
• Australian data residency options

CarSorted relies on reputable third-party service providers to run the site (for hosting, databases, authentication, email delivery, security and analytics). Some of these providers store or process data on servers located outside Australia — principally in the United States, and potentially other countries in which they operate. This means your personal information (for example, your email address and account data) may be disclosed to, and processed by, recipients overseas.

We take reasonable steps to use providers that maintain appropriate security and data-protection practices. By using CarSorted and providing your information, you consent to this overseas handling. The anonymous usage analytics described above contain no personal information and cannot be used to identify you wherever they are processed.

You have the right to:

• Access: Request a copy of your personal information we hold
• Correction: Request correction of inaccurate information
• Deletion: Request deletion of your account and all associated data
• Portability: Request your data in a machine-readable format
• Complaint: Lodge a complaint with the OAIC if unsatisfied with our response

When using our "Help Me Choose" AI feature:

• Processing: Your conversation may be processed by AI to generate car recommendations
• Storage: We do not store your conversation history permanently
• Third Party: AI processing is handled by our AI service provider
• Consent: You must accept the AI terms before using this feature

AI recommendations are not financial advice. Always verify specifications with your dealer before purchase.

We use only essential cookies for:

• Authentication: Keeping you logged in securely
• Preferences: Remembering your theme and comparison selections
• Security: Protecting against cross-site request forgery

We also use a small amount of browser storage (not cookies): your theme and recent comparison choices are kept in local storage on your device, and the temporary, anonymous session token described under Anonymous Usage Analytics above is kept in tab memory (session storage) and erased when you close the tab.

We do not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, cross-site or cross-device trackers, or any third-party marketing cookies.

In compliance with the Notifiable Data Breaches (NDB) scheme under the Privacy Act, we will notify the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) and affected individuals if a data breach is likely to result in serious harm.
