Every SUV in Australia Ranked by Boot Space

Boot space is one of those specs that sounds boring until you're trying to fit a pram, two suitcases, and a week's worth of groceries in your SUV. We compiled the manufacturer-published boot space figures for every SUV sold in Australia so you can compare them side by side.

The Big Table: Mid-Size SUVs

These are the SUVs most Australian families buy. Huge differences here that you won't spot in a quick test drive.

SUVBoot (seats up)Boot (seats down)Price From
Tesla Model Y854L1,919L$57,900
Skoda Kodiaq (5-seat)765L1,690L$47,990
Kia Sportage591L1,780L$37,490
Honda CR-V587L1,600L$42,500
Hyundai Tucson546L1,725L$38,500
Toyota RAV4542L1,171L$39,560
Subaru Forester509L1,768L$39,990
Nissan X-Trail486L1,424L$38,190
Mazda CX-5438L1,342L$37,190

Look at that spread. The Model Y has nearly double the boot space of a CX-5 with seats up. That's because there's no engine under the bonnet, so the whole car is optimised for interior space.

Small SUVs

If you're cross-shopping small SUVs, boot space is where most of them fall short.

Small SUVBootSeats DownPrice From
Toyota Corolla Cross440L1,252L$32,300
Mazda CX-30430L1,406L$33,690
Kia Seltos433L1,393L$30,590
Hyundai Kona407L1,205L$32,300
Toyota Yaris Cross390L1,097L$27,990
Nissan Juke354L1,014L$30,990

The Pram Test

This is the real-world test that matters. A typical folded pram (Bugaboo, Uppababy) takes up 80-120L. Here's what fits alongside it:

  • 500L+ boot - pram + shopping bags + nappy bag. No stress.
  • 400-500L boot - pram fits but you're stacking shopping on top or in the back seat
  • Under 400L - pram takes over the whole boot. You'll be putting shopping at your passenger's feet

If you've got young kids, don't buy an SUV with less than 450L boot space. You'll regret it within a week.

Why Seats-Down Matters

Seats-down space is the number you care about for IKEA runs, moving house, or packing for a family holiday. Some SUVs fold completely flat, others leave a big step. The Sportage goes from 591L to a massive 1,780L because the seats fold perfectly flat. The RAV4 only goes to 1,171L because of a raised boot floor (the hybrid battery sits underneath).

Worth Knowing About Boot Space Numbers

All boot space figures here are manufacturer-published specs. They're typically measured to the roof line, not to the parcel shelf. So the number you see on paper includes space above where you'd normally stack things. Real-world usable space can feel like 70-80% of the quoted number.

Some manufacturers also measure with rear seats slid forward, which gives a bigger number but makes the back seat tight for adults. Worth checking how the spec was measured if you're splitting hairs between two cars.
