Best Used Cars Under $20,000 in Australia

$20,000 gets you a lot of car on the used market. The trick is knowing which models are built to last and which ones will eat your savings in repair bills. We went through the reliability data and ownership costs to find the safest bets.

The Golden Rules of Used Car Buying

  • Service history is non-negotiable. No logbook stamps? Walk away. A serviced car with 100,000km is better than an unserviced car with 50,000km.
  • Run a PPSR check ($2). Confirms no money owing, not stolen, not a write-off. Takes 2 minutes at ppsr.gov.au.
  • Get a pre-purchase inspection ($250-350). An independent mechanic checks for hidden issues. This has saved countless buyers from expensive mistakes.
  • Check the recall history. Free at productsafety.gov.au. Make sure all recalls have been completed.

The Safest Bet: Toyota Corolla (2018-2021)

There's a reason Corollas are everywhere. They just don't break. A 2019 Corolla with 70,000km and full service history will probably run to 300,000km without a major issue. Parts are cheap, every mechanic knows them, and insurance is among the lowest of any car.

For $15-18k you can find a well-kept example with low-ish km. If you spot a Corolla Hybrid in this range, grab it. They're hard to find used because owners keep them.

Best for Driving Fun: Mazda3 (2018-2020)

The Mazda3 is for people who want a reliable car that doesn't feel like a boring appliance. The interior quality is a level above the Corolla and i30. The 6-speed auto shifts cleanly and the chassis is genuinely engaging on a back road. Reliability is nearly as good as Toyota.

Best Value: Kia Cerato (2019-2021)

Ceratos depreciate faster than Corollas and Mazda3s, which means better value on the used market. A 2020 Cerato Sport with 60,000km goes for around $16-18k. You get more car for less money, and if it's under 7 years old, the original warranty might still apply.

Cars to Avoid Under $20k

  • European luxury (BMW 3 Series, Audi A3, Mercedes A-Class). They're in budget because they've depreciated heavily. But the servicing costs haven't depreciated. A $500 service on a Toyota becomes a $1,500 service on a BMW. One gearbox issue and you're looking at a $3,000-5,000 bill.
  • First-gen Chinese brands. Early MG, Great Wall, and Chery models from 2015-2018 had quality issues. The newer ones (2021+) are much better, but at this budget you're getting the older ones.
  • High-km turbo cars. Turbo engines are fine when new, but at 100,000km+ the turbo, intercooler, and related components start needing attention. A naturally-aspirated engine at the same km is lower risk.
  • Any car without service history. Doesn't matter how good the price looks. No history = unknown risk.
