MG has added a proper mid-size electric SUV to its Australian range. The all-new MG S6 EV slots in above the smaller MG 4 hatch and the ZS EV, and it lands with sharp drive-away pricing: $49,990 for the rear-drive Essence and $56,990 for the dual-motor all-wheel-drive Essence. Both are loaded single-grade variants, so there are no option packs to navigate, you just choose range or performance.

Range, Power and Charging

Both variants run a 77kWh battery on MG's new Modular Scalable Platform. The rear-drive Essence is the range champion at up to 530km WLTP from its single 180kW motor, with a 7.3-second 0 to 100km/h time. The Essence AWD adds a front motor for 266kW all up, dropping the sprint to a quick 5.1 seconds while range eases to 485km. On a 150kW DC charger, MG quotes a 10 to 80 per cent top-up in around 38 minutes, and the rear-drive model gets a standard heat pump to hold range in the cold.

The cabin pairs a 12.8-inch HD touchscreen with a 10.25-inch driver display and a head-up display, and MG has kept physical buttons for core controls rather than burying everything in menus. Standard kit includes an 11-speaker audio system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, and power-adjustable front seats. Practicality is a strong point, with up to 1,690 litres of boot space with the rear seats folded, a front trunk for cables, and a powered tailgate.

Safety

Every S6 EV gets the MG Pilot driver-assist suite and seven airbags as standard. MG Pilot bundles autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and blind-spot detection, and there is a 360-degree camera for tight parking. The body uses a mix of high-strength and hot-stamped steels. The S6 EV has not yet been rated by ANCAP, so there is no star rating to quote yet. We will update this story once one is published.

How It Compares

At $49,990 drive-away with 530km of range, the S6 EV Essence RWD lands right in the thick of the mid-size electric SUV fight, undercutting a lot of the electric SUV field on a drive-away basis. It squares up against the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7, Kia EV5 and Geely EX5, and the dual-motor AWD's 5.1-second sprint for $56,990 is genuinely quick for the money. Warranty

MG backs the S6 EV with up to a 10-year warranty when you keep servicing it within the MG dealer network, one of the longest factory warranties on sale in Australia and a big part of MG's value pitch.

Our Take

The S6 EV is exactly the car MG's range was missing: a roomy mid-size electric SUV at a sharp drive-away price. The rear-drive Essence is the pick for most buyers, with 530km of range, a heat pump and a single, well-equipped grade for under $50,000 drive-away. The AWD is a tempting step up if you want hot-hatch acceleration in a family SUV. The only real unknown is the ANCAP result, which is still to come. If you are cross-shopping the mid-size EV class, the S6 EV has just made the list more interesting.
