The 2026 Chery C5 Hybrid Urban is a self-charging hybrid small SUV built to be cheap to run, pairing a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined 165kW and 295Nm while using just 4.9L/100km. There's no plug to deal with, it tops up its own 1.83kWh battery as you drive, and the 51-litre tank stretches to roughly 1,000km between fills. Standard kit is generous for the money, with dual 12.3-inch screens, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated synthetic-leather front seats, dual-zone climate and a full safety suite including AEB, adaptive cruise and blind-spot monitoring. At $31,990 drive-away it is sharp value, though ANCAP is yet to publish a rating for the hybrid and braked towing is a light 750kg.

The 2026 Chery C5 Hybrid Ultimate takes the same frugal self-charging hybrid setup, a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine plus electric motor making a combined 165kW/295Nm at 4.9L/100km, and adds the gear that lifts it towards premium. Over the Urban you get a Sony eight-speaker system, a power sunroof, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, 360-degree camera, power tailgate, wireless charging and 18-inch alloys. It is still front-wheel drive with a single-speed hybrid transmission and needs no plug, sipping fuel while topping up its own 1.83kWh battery for close to 1,000km of range. At $34,990 drive-away it is a lot of hybrid SUV for the money, just note ANCAP has not rated the hybrid yet and braked towing is a modest 750kg.
