Price Breakdown

$10,200 difference for essentially the same mechanical package. The Ranger XLT V6 at $63,790 and the Amarok Aventura V6 at $73,990 share the same engine, gearbox, platform, and 4WD system. You're paying a $10k premium for VW interior design and badge. Over 5 years, the Ranger saves even more because Ford ute resale is slightly better than VW in Australia.

Safety Rundown

Same platform means very similar crash performance. Both 5-star ANCAP. Both have AEB, blind spot monitoring, lane keep, adaptive cruise. The Amarok gets a slightly different tuning on some systems but the hardware is shared. Call it a tie.

Feature Showdown

This is the Amarok's one real advantage. The VW interior is noticeably more premium: better materials, tighter panel gaps, a larger 12-inch infotainment screen, and DCC adaptive dampers on the Aventura. The Ranger XLT feels more utilitarian inside. If you spend a lot of time in the cab, the Amarok's cabin is genuinely nicer to sit in.

Drivetrain

Identical. Literally the same engine.

The new Amarok is built alongside the Ranger at Ford's Thailand factory. Same assembly line. VW has tuned the suspension slightly differently (softer on the Amarok, firmer on the Ranger) and the steering feel is a touch lighter, but the mechanical guts are identical. The 0.2L/100km fuel difference is within margin of error.

True Cost to Own

Same engine and servicing requirements, so running costs are nearly identical. The price gap at purchase is what separates them.

5yr Fuel$12,038$12,315

Resale (est.)-$40,300 (58%)-$38,400 (48%)
True 5yr Cost$56,238$70,315

The Ranger is $14,077 cheaper over 5 years. Lower purchase price, lower insurance, cheaper servicing (Ford parts vs VW parts pricing), and better resale percentage. The VW badge costs a lot more than just the sticker price.

The Badge Premium

Let's be honest about what you're buying. The Amarok Aventura is a Ford Ranger with a nicer interior and a VW badge. If you value the interior and the badge, that's a valid choice. But go in with your eyes open: you're paying $10k+ for cosmetics and brand, not for a better ute underneath.

When the Amarok Makes Sense

If you want a ute that feels more like a European SUV inside, the Amarok delivers. The cabin is genuinely a class above the Ranger. For someone who drives 3+ hours a day and the interior matters, the premium might be worth it. Also if you're a tradie who needs a ute for work but wants something that doesn't feel like a work truck, the Amarok splits the difference nicely.

Who Should Buy Which?

Buy the Ranger if: you want the best value, higher payload, better resale, and aren't fussed about interior premium. Most buyers should buy the Ranger.

Buy the Amarok if: interior quality and driving refinement matter to you, and you're happy paying a significant premium for it.

The Verdict

Same engine, same platform, same gearbox, same towing. The Ranger is $10,200 cheaper and has more payload. The Amarok has a nicer interior and the VW badge. That's basically it. Unless the interior and badge are worth $10k to you, the Ranger is the smarter buy.
