If you have been circling a small SUV under $40k and could not decide between a fresh Chinese petrol, a plug hybrid or a full EV, Omoda Jaecoo Australia just made the middle box a lot more interesting. The Jaecoo J5 Hybrid Summit has been priced at $34,990 driveaway on a launch offer that runs 15 July 2026 to 14 August 2026, with first customer cars landing in August. It finishes off the J5 lineup that already includes a petrol Track from $25,990 driveaway, a petrol Summit at $29,990 driveaway and the J5 EV Summit at $36,990 driveaway.

The interesting part for anyone comparing it on CarSorted is the shape of the drivetrain. It is not a mild hybrid glued onto the petrol. It is a proper series parallel hybrid with a much bigger e-motor than the combustion engine puts out, borrowed from the Chery Super Hybrid family. That is why the combined output jumps to 165kW and 295Nm, and why the claimed combined fuel figure drops to 5.6L/100km without any need to plug in. On paper that means it out-punches the J5 petrol on power by more than 50 per cent, out-runs the RAV4 Hybrid on quoted combined output, and still lands under a Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid on price.

Pricing

The full J5 walk now looks like this. Every price on the ladder is confirmed by Omoda Jaecoo Australia and every one is a driveaway number rather than list, which is worth flagging when you compare it against a Toyota or Mazda showroom quote that will typically add on-roads on top.

VariantPowertrainPrice (driveaway)
J5 Track Petrol1.5T petrol, CVT, FWD$25,990
J5 Summit Petrol1.5T petrol, CVT, FWD$29,990
J5 Summit Hybrid1.5T petrol + 150kW e-motor, DHT, FWD$34,990
J5 Summit EVSingle motor, FWD$36,990

$34,990 driveaway is a launch offer, valid on new stock vehicles pre-ordered from participating Omoda Jaecoo dealers between 15 July and 14 August 2026, while stocks last. Confirmed by Jaecoo Australia.

Powertrain and Efficiency

The J5 Hybrid runs Chery Group's Super Hybrid System stack. Combustion side is a 1.5 litre four cylinder turbocharged petrol producing 105kW and 215Nm that runs on the Miller cycle for efficiency. On the electric side sits a permanent magnet synchronous motor rated at 150kW and 310Nm. Drive still goes only to the front wheels, sent through a dedicated hybrid transmission with a single fixed engine ratio rather than a torque converter or CVT.

Combined figures land at 165kW and 295Nm. Jaecoo Australia's local ADR quote is 5.6L/100km combined with 126g/km CO2. Chinese cycle combined range is quoted at around 980km which we would not carry across to Australian conditions, but even discounted to the ADR fuel figure and a 60 litre tank the car should still comfortably clear 900km between stops. Regenerative braking is standard and the small buffer battery is fed by the engine and by brake regen. There is no plug on the car, so you never have to think about a charger.

Design and Cabin

The Hybrid keeps the same upright, boxy body the J5 petrol and EV wear, right down to the near vertical rear window, small round door handles and a squared off shoulder line that borrows heavily from a certain British off-roader. Where the Summit petrol runs 18 inch alloys and a waterfall grille, the Hybrid rolls on the same wheel design with subtle blue accents and a closed off nose to smooth airflow. It measures 4,380mm long, 1,860mm wide and 1,650mm tall, so it is a genuine small SUV in the same footprint bracket as a Hyundai Kona or a Kia Seltos rather than the larger Tucson or Sportage. Boot space is quoted at 410 litres.

Inside, the Summit trim carries over the same feature list the petrol Summit runs, headlined by a 13.2 inch central touchscreen, an 8.8 inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual zone climate control, six way power front seats, TUV certified synthetic leather trim, heated and ventilated front seats, a fixed panoramic glass roof with a powered sunshade, powered tailgate, ambient lighting and a 50W wireless phone charging pad. An eight speaker sound system is standard along with the "Hello Jaecoo" voice assistant. Kit for kit, that is a lot more standard equipment than a base petrol Corolla Cross or a Hyundai Kona at the same money.

Safety

The Jaecoo J5 range is not yet rated by ANCAP. The related Jaecoo J7 has scored five stars under the current protocol, and Jaecoo has said it expects a similar result once the J5 is put through crash testing, but until ANCAP publishes a report we would not assume a rating. The car ships with seven airbags, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping and lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, forward and rear collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, an intelligent driver monitoring system, a 360 degree panoramic camera and front and rear parking sensors. Tyre pressure monitoring, hill hold and hill descent are also standard.

How It Compares

The obvious cross shop is the J5 Summit Petrol at $29,990 driveaway. For the extra $5,000 the Hybrid gives you 57kW more, drops fuel use from 7.5L/100km to a claimed 5.6L/100km, and shifts smoother thanks to the dedicated hybrid transmission instead of the CVT. At 15,000km a year and $1.90/L, that fuel figure gap saves roughly $540 a year. The break even sits just inside a decade, so the Hybrid case is easier if you value the drivability and the extra power than if you are chasing pure payback.

The other cross shop is the J5 EV Summit at $36,990 driveaway. That car is $2,000 more, gives you a longer set of highway range if you can charge at home overnight, but locks you into a plug in routine and public DC stops for road trips. The Hybrid never needs a plug, so if you rent, park on the street or drive between regional towns most weekends, it removes the charging math entirely. For a wider petrol vs hybrid vs EV cost picture, our EV vs Hybrid cost comparison walks the numbers.

Outside the J5 range, the closest showroom rivals are the Chery Tiggo 4 Hybrid, the GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid and the Hyundai Kona Hybrid. The J5 Hybrid is comfortably the most powerful of that pack on the numbers, and its 8 year warranty beats Toyota's 5 year unlimited km cover and Hyundai's 5 year unlimited. You can build side by side sheets against any of them on the CarSorted comparison tool.

Warranty and Servicing

Every J5 sold in Australia, Hybrid included, is backed by an 8 year unlimited kilometre vehicle warranty. Omoda Jaecoo Australia also throws in 8 years of capped price servicing and up to 8 years of roadside assistance when servicing is completed at an authorised dealer. The Hybrid's traction battery is a small buffer pack rather than a plug in unit, but it is covered under the same 8 year window. That headline number is more than a Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid (5 years), a Hyundai Kona Hybrid (5 years) and a Kia Seltos Hybrid (7 years) get on their standard book.

The CarSorted Angle

On CarSorted, the closest in-database rival to the J5 Hybrid Summit is the Chery C5 Hybrid, listed with a 1.5T Super Hybrid stack producing 165kW combined and a claimed 4.9L/100km, priced from $34,990 driveaway. The J5 Hybrid essentially puts the same drivetrain and price point into a taller, boxier body with a bit more cabin height and a bigger back seat. Against the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid GX at $37,440 driveaway on the CarSorted directory, the J5 Hybrid is $2,450 cheaper, gets you 45kW more system power, and matches Toyota's hybrid drivability if the local tune lands as smooth as the Chery derived system does in the C5. The trade off is brand track record and dealer network, both of which still lean Toyota's way for now.

Cross shop it live on the CarSorted comparison tool against a Corolla Cross Hybrid, a Kona Hybrid and the closely related Jaecoo J5 EV to see where the running cost lines actually cross.

What This Means for Buyers

If you are cross shopping small SUV hybrids at around $35k driveaway and are open to a Chinese badge, the J5 Hybrid is now the value benchmark on paper. It pairs the highest quoted combined power in the class with the longest warranty at the price point, and it lands in the middle of a J5 range you can sanity check on either side against a cheap petrol and a locally proven EV. Buyers who would have been forced to jump from a $29,990 petrol J5 straight up to a $36,990 EV can now stop in the middle and pick up the driveline they actually wanted from day one.

Two things still hang over the story. The first is ANCAP. Until a rating is published, some buyers will hold off on principle, and fleet buyers with a five star mandate are locked out completely. The second is real world fuel use and refinement. Chery's Super Hybrid family has been tested here in the C5 already and returned smooth results, so we expect the J5 Hybrid to behave similarly, but the local first drives are only just starting. If both of those settle down over the next couple of months, the J5 Hybrid at $34,990 driveaway becomes a genuinely awkward car for Toyota to answer.
