Who the GAC Aion V suits

The Aion V suits buyers who do longer drives and want the most range and the fastest charging of these two. It also suits families who mostly use the boot with the rear seats up, where it has 427L of space. It's the lower-priced car of the pair at $44,590 (RRP excl. on-roads).

Who the Geely EX5 suits

The EX5 suits buyers who want more pace, with an official acceleration time of 6.9 seconds from a standstill. It also suits anyone who often folds the rear seats to carry bulky gear, where it opens up to 1,877L. If knowing your servicing costs upfront matters, it has a capped servicing figure on record.

What decides it

  1. 1. Range and charging

The Aion V has a WLTP range of 510km from a 75.3kWh battery, against 450km from a 68.4kWh battery in the EX5. That's about 60km more for the GAC. It also charges faster on DC, with a maximum of 180kW versus 100kW for the Geely.

  2. 2. Boot space

With the rear seats up, the Aion V has a 427L boot and the EX5 has 302L, so the GAC has about 125L more. Fold the seats and it flips: the EX5 offers 1,877L against 978L in the Aion V. Think about how often you actually fold the seats.

  3. 3. Price and pace

The Aion V is $44,590 (RRP excl. on-roads) and the EX5 is $45,990 (RRP excl. on-roads), so the GAC is about $1,400 less before on-roads. The EX5 gives you more for the extra, with 160kW and 320Nm against 150kW and 210Nm. Its official acceleration time is 6.9 seconds, about 2.1 seconds quicker than the Aion V's 9.0 seconds.

Running costs

Energy use is close, with the Aion V rated at 16.7 kWh/100km and the EX5 at 16.9 kWh/100km. The EX5 has $1,316 (capped-price servicing total) on record, with services every 12 months, while we have no capped servicing or service interval figure for the Aion V. The Aion V comes with an 8-year warranty with unlimited km, and the EX5 has a 7-year warranty, though we have no distance limit on record for it.
