What engines does the VW Crafter use?

Two 2.0-litre TDI diesels: the TDI340 single-turbo (103kW/340Nm) and the TDI410 bi-turbo (130kW/410Nm). Both feature BlueMotion stop-start and brake energy recuperation, and pair to either an 8-speed automatic torque-converter or an 6-speed manual depending on configuration.

What's the difference between Crafter 35, 50 and 55?

The number refers to GVM. Crafter 35 is rated to 3.55 tonnes GVM (driveable on a car licence), Crafter 50 is 4.49 tonnes, and Crafter 55 is 5.5 tonnes. The 50 and 55 require a Light Rigid licence in Australia and use rear-wheel drive with reinforced rear axles.

Is the Crafter front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive?

All three. The standard transversely-mounted 2.0 TDI gives 100mm lower load floor on the FWD versions (up to 4.0t GVM). 4Motion all-wheel drive is also available up to 4.0t. Rear-wheel drive variants (3.55t to 5.5t GVM) use a longitudinally-mounted engine and are aimed at tail-heavy bodies like tippers, dropsides and motorhomes.

How much can the Crafter tow?

Crafter 35 variants are rated to 2,500kg braked / 750kg unbraked. Crafter 50 and 55 step up to 3,500kg braked / 750kg unbraked. Towball download is 150kg across the range.

Volkswagen Australia covers the Crafter with a 5-year unlimited-kilometre warranty and 1 year of roadside assist. Service intervals are 30,000km or 15 months on Crafter models (longer than VW's other models because of commercial duty cycle).
