BYD has handed over its 150,000th vehicle in Australia, and it wasn't a metro showroom moment. The car was a Seal 6 Touring, the plug-in hybrid wagon, delivered by BYD Warrnambool on Victoria's south-west coast to a customer from Portland.

BYD Australia announced it on 22 October 2026. It says the milestone came less than four years after it entered the market in 2022 with the Atto 3, followed by the Dolphin and the Seal.

What BYD Said

BYD Australia chief operating officer Stephen Collins said: "It means we are on the right track with what we're offering Australian customers." He also said he was delighted the 150,000th BYD came from one of its recently appointed regional and rural dealers, and that most recently opened BYD sales and service dealerships are outside the metro areas, a push that will continue for the rest of 2026 and well into 2027.

We've left the customer unnamed. It's a private buyer, and the point of the story is the car and the numbers, not who collected it.

The 2026 Numbers, From VFACTS

These are the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries' VFACTS figures for September 2026, released on 6 October. VFACTS is the FCAI's own count. The FCAI also publishes a sales-from-all-sources figure, which is a different basis, so don't mix tallies from different sources.

Source: FCAI, VFACTS September 2026 (year-to-date and September brand tables). BYD's September 2025 figure in the same table was 5,084.

BYD sold 76,614 vehicles in the first nine months, up 102 per cent on the 37,923 of the same period in 2025, which puts it second in the VFACTS brand table behind Toyota. Toyota is on 152,944 but down on last year; Ford is third on 61,104. In September alone BYD sold 8,191, up 61.1 per cent on 5,084 a year earlier, again second behind Toyota.

The gap to Toyota has been closer than that. In June, the FCAI's release has Toyota on 19,124 and BYD on 18,881, 243 sales apart.

On the model side, the Sealion 7 sold 2,687 in September, fourth in the FCAI's top 10 models behind the Ranger, RAV4 and HiLux. It is the one BYD in that top 10.

The Dealer Push

BYD Australia says it expects more than 150 sales and service outlets operating nationally by the end of 2026. The sites it named are Noosaville, Mareeba and Moorooka in Queensland, Mudgee in New South Wales, Seymour in Victoria, the Barossa in South Australia and Rockingham in Western Australia. Those are plans, not confirmed openings, so check with the dealer before you drive out.

What This Means for Buyers

A sales milestone doesn't change what any one car costs or how it performs. What it does tell you is where BYD is putting its effort: regional towns, where a nearby dealer for sales and servicing has often been the sticking point for buyers of newer brands. If that's you, ask the local dealer about service booking times and parts, not just the drive-away price.

If you're weighing the wagon itself, start with the Seal 6 Touring page and compare it against the other plug-in hybrids you're considering.

Disclaimer: The milestone, the car, the dealer, the Collins quote, the dealer-network plans and the named sites are from BYD Australia's announcement of 22 October 2026 as reported at the time. Sales figures are the FCAI's VFACTS for June and September 2026 and are on the VFACTS basis, not an all-sources basis. Dealer openings are BYD Australia's plans and may change. Confirm price, specification and availability with a BYD dealer.
