GWM Haval H6 Review (2026): The Value Family SUV Benchmark
Written by Uzzi · 23 May 2026
The GWM Haval H6 is one of the reasons Chinese brands have cracked Australia's top 10. It is a mid-size family SUV that does the sensible stuff well, lots of space, lots of kit, a long warranty, at a price that undercuts the Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson by thousands. And in 2026 you can have it as a petrol, a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid.

How much is it?
| Variant | Powertrain | RRP |
|---|---|---|
| Haval H6 Lux | Petrol | $35,990 |
| Haval H6 Lux Hybrid | Hybrid | $39,990 |
| Haval H6 Ultra PHEV AWD | Plug-in hybrid | $46,990 |
| Haval H6GT Ultra PHEV AWD | Plug-in hybrid | $53,990 |
The powertrains
The petrol H6 makes 170kW and is the price leader at $35,990. The self-charging hybrid steps up to 179kW and is the pick for low fuel bills without plugging in. The plug-in hybrid is the interesting one: 268kW and 760Nm through all four wheels, with around 100km of electric-only range, so you can do the daily commute on electricity then switch to petrol for trips. The sleeker H6GT PHEV pushes to 321kW and around 180km of EV range.
Inside and practical
The cabin is roomy and well equipped, with a 471-litre boot, big screens, synthetic leather and the full convenience kit even on lower grades. It is not the last word in material plushness, but it feels solid and modern, and there is generous space for a family of five.
How it drives
The H6 was GWM's first model to launch with suspension specifically tuned for Australian roads, and it shows in a settled, comfortable ride. It is not a driver's car, the steering is light and the focus is comfort, but for the school run and the highway it does exactly what a family SUV should.
Safety and ownership
Five-star ANCAP, a full suite of driver assists, and a class-leading seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty with capped-price servicing. That long warranty is a big part of the value story and helps offset the unknowns of a newer brand.
The verdict
The GWM Haval H6 is the value benchmark in the mid-size SUV class. It is roomy, generously equipped, comes in petrol, hybrid and PHEV flavours, and is backed by one of the best warranties in the business, all for thousands less than the established Japanese and Korean rivals. It is not the most exciting drive, but as sensible family transport it is very hard to argue with. Compare it in our best SUVs under $50k guide or see where it sits among the best Chinese cars.
