The BYD M9, sold in China as the Xia, is a large seven-seat plug-in hybrid people mover that BYD has confirmed for Australia, with a launch expected in the second half of 2026. It has been approved for local sale but is not yet on the market, so all specs here are preliminary and drawn from Chinese-market and Australian approval documents. At just over 5.1 metres long it lines up directly against the Kia Carnival, and it uses BYD's 1.5-litre turbo-petrol DM-i plug-in hybrid setup with a choice of two batteries and a claimed electric-only range of roughly 100 to 180km on China's optimistic CLTC cycle. Australia gets the plug-in hybrid version only, since the Xia is not built as a full EV. It slots in below the pricier, fully electric Denza D9, and if BYD prices it near its Chinese figures it could seriously undercut the Carnival.
