The Volkswagen California is the factory pop-top camper version of the Transporter, and the one sold new in Australia is the T6.1-based California 6.1 in Beach trim. It runs a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel, here in 110kW/340Nm TDI340 form, through a 7-speed dual-clutch auto with front-wheel drive or 4Motion all-wheel drive. Pricing runs from about $93,790 before on-road costs, and it sleeps up to four across the pop-top loft bed and a folding rear bench. The Australian Beach is the camper-lite version, so it gets the pop-top, awning and camping table and chairs, but no built-in kitchen or fridge. A new-generation California on the T7 Multivan is confirmed for Australia but has no local price or on-sale date yet. Figures here are from VW Australia and AU sources, not a road test.
