GWM has refreshed its coupe-styled mid-size SUV, and the headline is rare for this segment: the car got faster, better equipped and $3,000 cheaper. The 2026 GWM Haval H6GT Hi4 PHEV now lists at $52,990 driveaway, brings a dual-motor plug-in hybrid all-wheel-drive system, and gets the new 14.6-inch Coffee OS infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay.

The petrol-only H6GT Ultra continues at $44,990 driveaway, so the Hi4 badge is a $8,000 walk-up to electrified AWD. GWM says electrified variants now make up 51.5% of all H6GT sales in Australia and the H6GT PHEV currently holds a 3.3% share of the local plug-in hybrid segment. Not massive, but enough for GWM to claim second spot on the national PHEV sales chart for March 2026.

Hi4: What Actually Changed Under the Skin

The bodywork carries over, but the drivetrain is effectively new. GWM has dropped in its Hi4 intelligent hybrid system: a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, dedicated hybrid transmission, and two electric motors, one per axle. That gives the H6GT PHEV true mechanical all-wheel drive instead of the old through-the-road setup, which matters on wet roundabouts and gravel driveways more than it does on a spec sheet.

Combined outputs are 321kW and 642Nm. GWM quotes 4.6 seconds to 100km/h, three tenths quicker than before, and 0.6L/100km on the combined cycle with a full battery. That last number assumes you're plugging in; once the battery is depleted, expect real-world consumption closer to 6 to 7L/100km, which is still competitive for a 321kW AWD SUV.

The 35.43kWh battery carries over and still delivers up to 183km of NEDC electric range. NEDC tends to overstate real-world range by around 20%, so 130 to 150km is a fair daily expectation. That's enough to cover most Australian commutes on electricity alone, with the petrol engine only kicking in for weekend trips.

Charging

The H6GT PHEV retains CCS2 DC fast charging, which is unusual at this price point: most PHEVs in the sub-$55k bracket are AC-only. Useful on a road trip if you want to top the battery back up on the go rather than burn petrol for the rest of the drive home. Interior: The Big Screen Finally Arrives

The cabin is where most of the 2026 update's budget seems to have gone. The old 12.3-inch screen is out, replaced by a 14.6-inch 1080p HD touchscreen running the new Coffee OS interface. Crucially, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now wireless, which was the single most common complaint about the pre-update car.

Behind the new steering wheel sits a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and the gear selector has moved from the centre console up onto the steering column. That opens up the console for a proper wireless phone charging pad and useable storage, which the old transmission tunnel never really had.

Standard kit stays generous for the money: suede-appointed seats with GT embossing, heated and ventilated powered fronts, heated leather steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, 19-inch black alloys, hands-free tailgate, 360-degree camera and a seven-airbag package including a centre airbag. Adaptive cruise with stop-and-go and a full ADAS suite are also standard.

How It Stacks Up

At $52,990 driveaway, the Hi4 PHEV is one of the cheapest AWD plug-in hybrids in Australia and easily the quickest for the money. The main rivals it goes after are the BYD Sealion 6 and Jaecoo J7 SHS PHEV on price, and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV on brand reassurance. None of them get near 4.6 seconds to 100km/h.

The missing piece is ANCAP: the H6GT currently carries no published rating. If active safety matters to you, read our explainer on how ANCAP ratings work before committing. For segment context, the Best Hybrid Cars 2026 guide ranks every mainstream option, and Best SUVs Under $50k 2026 shows how it looks against non-hybrid alternatives.

Our Take

The old H6GT PHEV was a hard sell at $55,990 driveaway with a wired-only CarPlay setup and a single-motor layout that did not really justify the GT badge. GWM has fixed both in one update and cut the price on top. $52,990 driveaway for a 4.6-second coupe-SUV with 183km of electric range, wireless CarPlay and dual-motor AWD is strong value.

The trade-offs are worth knowing. The brand is newer than Mitsubishi or Toyota, resale remains an unknown, and the 7-year warranty, while good, is not as long as the 10-year cover Kia, MG and Mitsubishi offer on selected lines. If price is the main constraint and you want an AWD PHEV with real performance, the H6GT Hi4 is hard to look past.

Disclaimer: Pricing and specifications are based on GWM Australia's announcement and are correct at time of publishing. Driveaway pricing is nationally consistent but on-road cost components can vary with stamp duty and registration changes. Electric range is NEDC; expect approximately 20% less in real-world WLTP-equivalent conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the 2026 GWM Haval H6GT Hi4 PHEV in Australia?
The H6GT Hi4 PHEV lands at $52,990 driveaway nationally. That's a $3,000 cut on the pre-update car and it already includes on-road costs, so it's the price you actually drive out for.
What does the Hi4 system do?
Hi4 is GWM's dual-motor plug-in hybrid all-wheel drive system. It pairs a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with a motor on each axle, so the H6GT PHEV now runs mechanical AWD rather than front-drive only. Combined outputs are 321kW and 642Nm.
How quick is the H6GT Hi4 PHEV to 100km/h?
GWM claims 4.6 seconds, three tenths quicker than the previous model's 4.9s claim. That makes it one of the quickest sub-$55k SUVs on sale in Australia.
How far can it go on electric power alone?
Up to 183km on NEDC. NEDC is generous compared to WLTP, so expect roughly 130 to 150km of real-world EV range on a full 35.43kWh battery.
Does it support wireless Apple CarPlay?
Yes. The new 14.6-inch touchscreen running Coffee OS adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which the previous H6GT PHEV only offered wired.
What's the warranty?
Seven years and unlimited kilometres on the vehicle. The high-voltage battery is covered for eight years or 160,000km, whichever comes first.
Is the petrol-only H6GT still available?
Yes. The petrol H6GT Ultra continues alongside the Hi4 PHEV at $44,990 driveaway for buyers who don't need a plug.
