The 2026 Mazda3 G20 Pure is an entry-level hatchback that suits budget-conscious buyers seeking a practical daily driver, offering genuine value with a 2.0L petrol engine producing 114kW and 200Nm, 295-litre boot space, and five seats for growing families. Its standout strength is exceptional fuel efficiency at just 3.8L/100km combined with a competitive annual running cost of approximately $1787, making it genuinely economical to own. One thing to consider is that the modest 114kW output means it's best suited to city and suburban driving rather than extended highway cruising where you might want more performance.

The 2026 Mazda3 G20 Evolve is a practical five-seat front-wheel-drive hatchback suited to first-time buyers and daily commuters seeking efficient, reliable transport. Its standout strength is fuel economy at 3.8L/100km combined with a modest 114kW two-litre petrol engine, keeping running costs to approximately $1787 annually, whilst the five-star ANCAP safety rating and five-year warranty provide solid peace of mind. One thing to consider is the modest 1000kg towing capacity, which limits caravan or trailer options compared to SUV alternatives in Mazda's lineup.

The 2026 Mazda3 G20 Touring is a practical five-seat petrol hatchback built for Australian buyers seeking affordable everyday transport with genuine efficiency credentials, delivering 3.8L/100km consumption and modest annual running costs of approximately $1787. Its standout strength is the combination of five-star ANCAP safety, a 295-litre boot for real-world versatility, and Mazda's proven reliability backed by a five-year warranty-all in a lightweight 1360kg package that feels more premium than its entry-level positioning suggests. The main consideration is its 114kW two-litre engine, which is adequate rather than spirited, so you'll want to test-drive it to confirm the performance suits your commute style, particularly if you regularly tackle heavy traffic or motorway merges.

The 2026 Mazda3 G25 Evolve SP is a practical five-seat hatchback that suits buyers wanting reliable, efficient daily transport with a 2.5-litre petrol engine delivering 139kW and 252Nm, achieving a claimed 3.8L/100km fuel consumption. Its standout strength is the combination of five-star ANCAP safety rating, respectable 1000kg towing capacity, and a 295-litre boot that balances everyday practicality with reasonable running costs of around $1787 annually. One thing to consider: while the 2.5-litre engine provides adequate performance, this entry-level Evolve SP misses out on some of the more advanced features and refinements available in higher trims, so ensure the base specification meets your needs.

The G25 Evolve SP sedan is the entry point to the more powerful 2.5-litre Mazda3 range, giving you 139kW and 252Nm for noticeably stronger mid-range pull than the 2.0-litre cars. It pairs that with sportier black exterior trim, the 10.25-inch display and standard Vision Technology, plus the practical 444L sedan boot. It's the grade for buyers who want the bigger engine without paying for the leather-lined GT and Astina.

The G20 Pure sedan is the entry point to the Mazda3 range, pairing the 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol four with the booted body that swaps the hatch's 295L cargo hold for a much larger 444L boot. It keeps the same sharp handling and quality cabin as the hatch but is the pick for buyers who want a traditional sedan shape and a bigger, more enclosed luggage area. Standard kit is modest by 2026 standards, so it suits value-focused buyers happy to skip the Vision Technology safety pack.

The G25 GT sedan adds genuine near-luxury touches to the 2.5-litre Mazda3, with black leather seats, 10-way power driver adjustment with memory, a heated steering wheel and heated front seats. It keeps the strong 139kW/252Nm engine and the large 444L sedan boot. It sits just below the flagship Astina, so it's the pick if you want most of the luxury kit without the sunroof and Bose system.

The G25 Astina sedan is the flagship Mazda3, adding a power glass sunroof, adaptive LED headlights and a 12-speaker premium audio system on top of the GT's leather-lined cabin. It's the most indulgent way to have the 2.5-litre sedan, though it still rides on the same 139kW engine and front-wheel-drive layout as the cheaper G25 grades. Note the optional Burgundy leather trim is hatch-only, so Astina sedans come in black leather.

The G20 Evolve sedan steps up from the Pure with 18-inch alloys, an auto-dimming mirror and a few extra comfort touches, while keeping the 2.0-litre petrol engine and the roomy 444L boot. It's a sensible middle ground for sedan buyers who want a slightly better-equipped Mazda3 without moving up to the larger 2.5-litre engine. Like the Pure, the Vision Technology safety pack is optional rather than standard.

The G20 Touring sedan is where the Mazda3 starts to feel properly equipped, adding leather seats, the 10.25-inch Mazda Connect display, wireless smartphone mirroring and, crucially, the Vision Technology safety suite as standard. It keeps the efficient 2.0-litre petrol engine and the practical 444L sedan boot. For sedan buyers it's arguably the value sweet spot before the jump to the 2.5-litre G25 grades.

Mazda CX-5, BMW X3, MG S6 EV and Cupra Formentor All Score Five Stars With ANCAP

ANCAP hands maximum ratings to four family SUVs in a single sweep under its outgoing 2023-25 protocols. The all-new Mazda CX-5 posts a 93 per cent vulnerable road user score, the highest of any car tested in the entire 2023-25 protocol era. The MG S6 EV tops the batch for adult occupant protection at 92 per cent. The updated Cupra Formentor five-star result covers cars built from December 2025 onwards but excludes both the five-cylinder VZ5 and any four-cylinder ordered with the Extreme Package (the Sabelt bucket seats stop the centre airbag from fitting). BMW X3 (petrol G45) also confirmed at five stars, ratings apply to the current on-sale shape. Everything here sits under the older protocols, the tougher 2026 rules kicked in earlier this month and the BMW iX3 has become the first car to clear them.
