Tesla has put the Model Y L on sale in Australia, a longer, six-seat version of the country's top-selling EV. Priced from $74,900 before on-road costs, it stretches the Model Y into three-row family territory and, thanks to a bigger battery, claims 681km of WLTP range, the most of any Tesla currently sold here. Order books are open and first deliveries are already under way.

There is only one variant at launch, based on the Premium Long Range all-wheel-drive Model Y. It sits above the regular Model Y range as the most spacious and longest-range option in the line-up.

Six Seats and More Space

The Model Y L is a longer-bodied, three-row take on the Model Y. It uses a 2+2+2 layout, with two individual seats in the second row and a two-seat bench in the third, for six occupants. Both rear rows fold electronically, opening up more than 2,530 litres of cargo space, and there is a front boot under the bonnet on top of the rear load area.

Range and Charging

The Model Y L's 681km WLTP range is the headline. Drawn from an approximately 88.2kWh battery, it is around 14 per cent more than any other Model Y and makes this the longest-range Tesla on sale in Australia. On a Tesla V3 Supercharger it tops up at up to 250kW, and standard 11kW AC charging covers home top-ups overnight. For the basics on plugging in, our EV charging guide walks through the connector types and speeds.

A first for Tesla in Australia and New Zealand, the Model Y L adds vehicle-to-load, supplying up to 3.3kW of power to external devices through a separate Tesla adaptor. It is handy for camping gear, tools or charging another device away from a powerpoint.

Performance and Tech

Despite the extra length and seat, the Model Y L is no slouch. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive system makes 378kW and 590Nm for a claimed 0-100km/h of 5.0 seconds. Inside, it follows the minimalist Model Y template, with a central touchscreen handling almost every function and over-the-air updates keeping the software current.

Safety

The regular Tesla Model Y holds a 5-star ANCAP rating from 2025 testing, with strong adult and child occupant protection scores. ANCAP has not published a separate rating for the longer six-seat Model Y L, which shares the Model Y's structure and active safety systems. Our guide to ANCAP ratings explains how the scoring works.

How It Compares

At $74,900 before on-roads, the Model Y L gives Tesla a genuine six-seat family EV without jumping all the way to a Model X. It takes on three-row electric options like the Kia EV9 and pricier luxury seven-seaters, undercutting most of them while offering class-leading range and access to the Supercharger network. The Model Y has been Australia's best-selling EV, and the L adds a roomier body style to that recipe, as our EV sales coverage shows. For the wider field, see our best electric SUVs guide.

Warranty

Tesla covers the Model Y L with a 4-year/80,000km vehicle warranty and an 8-year/192,000km battery and drive unit warranty, with a minimum 70 per cent capacity retention guarantee over that period.

Our Take

The Model Y L answers an obvious gap in Tesla's local range: a roomy, three-row family EV that is not as big or as expensive as a Model X. You get six seats, the longest range of any Tesla here at 681km, V2L for the first time, and the Supercharger network behind it. At $74,900 before on-roads it is not cheap, but for families who want space and range in the country's most popular EV, the Model Y L is an easy one to shortlist.
