How much does the 2026 BYD Atto 1 Essential cost in Australia?

The recommended retail price is $23,990 before on-road costs, which makes it the cheapest new electric car on sale in Australia. BYD is also promoting the Essential at $19,990 drive-away, and that offer has two dates on it: you need to order by 15 December 2026 and take delivery by 31 December 2026. It is a campaign price rather than the RRP, so it lapses when the campaign ends. The drive-away offer applies to the Essential only. Confirm current pricing with your local BYD dealer.

What is the 2026 BYD Atto 1 safety rating?

The BYD Atto 1 holds a 5-star ANCAP safety rating awarded in 2025, and ANCAP applies it to all variants, so it covers both the Essential and the Premium. The scores behind it are 82 per cent for adult occupant protection, 86 per cent for child occupant protection, 76 per cent for vulnerable road users and 79 per cent for safety assist. Both grades get six airbags, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure assist, emergency lane keeping, forward collision warning, traffic sign recognition, tyre pressure monitoring and three-zone rear parking sensors. The Essential has a rear-view camera; the 360-degree camera is Premium only.

A single front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor making 65kW and 175Nm, driving the front wheels through a single reduction gear - there is no conventional gearbox. BYD quotes 11.1 seconds for 0-100km/h. BYD does not publish a top speed for the Atto 1 in its Australian material, so we do not list one.

BYD covers the Atto 1 with a 6-year or 150,000km vehicle warranty, whichever comes first, and an 8-year or 160,000km traction battery warranty that guarantees at least 70 per cent battery capacity retention. The warranty runs with the car and is transferable between owners, and the period starts from the date of first registration - in Western Australia, BYD measures it from the delivery date instead. Roadside assistance is 12 months from delivery. Servicing is every 20,000km or 12 months, and BYD does not publish capped service prices.

BYD quotes 220km of WLTP range from the Essential's 30kWh Blade battery, at 15.5kWh/100km. It takes AC charging at up to 11kW, which BYD says covers 0-100 per cent in 3.5 hours, and DC fast charging at up to 65kW, quoted at 30 minutes for 10-80 per cent and 25 minutes for 30-100 per cent.

308 litres with the rear seats up, expanding to 1,037 litres with them folded. It is a four-seat car, not a five-seater, and it carries a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel.
