The 2025 MG5 Essence is a budget-friendly turbo sedan now sold in a single, better-equipped grade after MG dropped the entry Vibe and added a meaningful safety upgrade. It uses a 1.5-litre turbo petrol with 119kW and 250Nm through an 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, returns a thrifty 6.4L/100km, and undercuts most small sedans at $32,990 drive-away. Equipment is generous for the money: a 10-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360-degree camera, synthetic-leather seats, a sunroof and a 10-year/250,000km conditional warranty. The trade-offs are a modest 3-star ANCAP rating and a fairly basic cabin with single-zone air-conditioning rather than dual-zone climate.

Toyota Australia confirms MY26 Corolla Cross pricing ahead of a 24 July showroom date. Range opens at $37,440 before on-roads for the GX 2WD Hybrid, up about $960. The headline is a new GR Sport AWD flagship at $50,990 (or $52,340 in Two-Tone), landing at exactly the same money as the Atmos AWD it sits next to. Same 146kW hybrid across the range with a 2.0L Atkinson four and e-CVT, but the GR Sport swaps some of Atmos's comfort kit for a unique suspension and steering tune, model-specific 19-inch alloys and a sportier interior. Existing 5-star ANCAP rating carries over. GX and Atmos land first on 24 July, GXL and GR Sport follow later in the year.

ANCAP hands maximum ratings to four family SUVs in a single sweep under its outgoing 2023-25 protocols. The all-new Mazda CX-5 posts a 93 per cent vulnerable road user score, the highest of any car tested in the entire 2023-25 protocol era. The MG S6 EV tops the batch for adult occupant protection at 92 per cent. The updated Cupra Formentor five-star result covers cars built from December 2025 onwards but excludes both the five-cylinder VZ5 and any four-cylinder ordered with the Extreme Package (the Sabelt bucket seats stop the centre airbag from fitting). BMW X3 (petrol G45) also confirmed at five stars, ratings apply to the current on-sale shape. Everything here sits under the older protocols, the tougher 2026 rules kicked in earlier this month and the BMW iX3 has become the first car to clear them.

Jaguar Land Rover Australia has filed recall REC-006645 covering 20,985 Defender, Discovery and Range Rover models built 2019 to 2026, the local slice of a 250,857-unit global campaign. The driver airbag clock spring connector can suffer fretting corrosion over time, gradually lifting resistance in the airbag circuit to the point the airbag may fail to deploy in a crash. JLR says the SRS warning lamp illuminates roughly 300 to 400 miles (480 to 640 kilometres) before the fault reaches non-deployment territory, so the car is drivable and no stop-drive has been ordered. The fix is a short retailer visit: a technician exposes the clock spring connector and applies a protective lubricant gel to seal the pins, no parts replaced, free of charge. Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar and Discovery Sport are not on this campaign. JLR is posting owners individually and Land Rover Australia is taking calls on 1800 625 642.
