The 2026 Lexus ES300h is a premium mid-size sedan powered by a 2.5-litre hybrid engine that produces 160kW and returns an impressive 5.3L/100km, making it ideal for Australian drivers seeking luxury and fuel efficiency without compromise. Its standout strength is the combination of a five-star ANCAP safety rating, comprehensive four-year warranty, and remarkably low estimated running costs of around $2410 annually, delivering genuine peace of mind. One thing to consider is that the front-wheel-drive layout and modest 221Nm torque may feel less engaging than some competitors, though the 473-litre boot and 1000kg towing capacity handle everyday practicality well.

The 2026 Lexus ES300h F Sport is a mid-size hybrid sedan that appeals to efficiency-conscious drivers wanting premium comfort and reliability, featuring a 2.5-litre petrol-electric powertrain producing 160kW and sipping just 5.3L/100km. Its standout strength is the combination of five-star ANCAP safety rating, generous 473-litre boot space, and proven Lexus durability backed by a four-year warranty-making it a sensible choice for families prioritising long-term ownership value. One consideration is that at 1720kg, the modest 1000kg towing capacity limits its practicality if you need to haul heavy loads or caravans.

The 2026 Lexus ES300h Sports Luxury is a mid-size hybrid sedan that appeals to efficiency-conscious buyers seeking comfort and reliability, with its 2.5-litre petrol-electric powertrain delivering 160kW and sipping just 5.3L/100km. Its standout strength is the combination of Toyota-sourced hybrid reliability backed by a 4-year warranty, five-star ANCAP safety rating, and modest annual running costs around $2410, making it a low-maintenance proposition over time. One consideration is the modest 221Nm torque output and front-wheel-drive setup, which means it prioritises refinement and efficiency over the dynamic performance some buyers in this segment might expect.

2026 Lexus ES Priced for Australia: Electric ES 350e From $77,000, Hybrid ES 300h From $75,000

Lexus Australia locks in the eighth-generation ES with a first-ever electric option. Hybrid ES 300h Luxury opens the range at $75,000 before on-roads, ES 300h Luxury + Enhancement Package sits at $82,000. The battery-electric ES 350e Sports Luxury lands at $77,000 with a 74.7kWh pack and up to 510km WLTP range, while the dual-motor ES 500e Sports Luxury AWD tops the range at $84,000 with 252kW combined and 465km. Both EVs share a 150kW DC and 22kW three-phase AC charging setup. Bigger new body: 5,140mm long on a 2,950mm wheelbase, 14-inch touchscreen, first Lexus to run Toyota's Arene OS. Electric variants arrive Q3 2026, hybrid ES 300h follows later in the year. ANCAP not yet rated after the previous car's 2018 5-star result expired.

2026 Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport Priced for Australia: New Sporty Flagship at $50,990, Range Opens at $37,440

Toyota Australia confirms MY26 Corolla Cross pricing ahead of a 24 July showroom date. Range opens at $37,440 before on-roads for the GX 2WD Hybrid, up about $960. The headline is a new GR Sport AWD flagship at $50,990 (or $52,340 in Two-Tone), landing at exactly the same money as the Atmos AWD it sits next to. Same 146kW hybrid across the range with a 2.0L Atkinson four and e-CVT, but the GR Sport swaps some of Atmos's comfort kit for a unique suspension and steering tune, model-specific 19-inch alloys and a sportier interior. Existing 5-star ANCAP rating carries over. GX and Atmos land first on 24 July, GXL and GR Sport follow later in the year.

Mazda CX-5, BMW X3, MG S6 EV and Cupra Formentor All Score Five Stars With ANCAP

ANCAP hands maximum ratings to four family SUVs in a single sweep under its outgoing 2023-25 protocols. The all-new Mazda CX-5 posts a 93 per cent vulnerable road user score, the highest of any car tested in the entire 2023-25 protocol era. The MG S6 EV tops the batch for adult occupant protection at 92 per cent. The updated Cupra Formentor five-star result covers cars built from December 2025 onwards but excludes both the five-cylinder VZ5 and any four-cylinder ordered with the Extreme Package (the Sabelt bucket seats stop the centre airbag from fitting). BMW X3 (petrol G45) also confirmed at five stars, ratings apply to the current on-sale shape. Everything here sits under the older protocols, the tougher 2026 rules kicked in earlier this month and the BMW iX3 has become the first car to clear them.
