What you get for the money

The Ascent Hybrid at $39,990 is the entry point and gets the same 170 kW hybrid drivetrain as the rest of the range. Standard equipment includes 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate, front and rear parking sensors, Toyota Safety Sense (autonomous emergency braking, lane departure alert with steering assist, all-speed adaptive cruise, road sign assist, automatic high beam) and 5-star ANCAP safety.

The Ascent Sport Hybrid at $42,990 adds 18-inch alloys, larger 12.3-inch touchscreen, smart key with push-button start, sports body kit and a powered driver's seat. The $3,000 step up is the sweet spot for most buyers.

The SL Hybrid flagship at $53,990 adds leather-accented seats with heating and ventilation, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 9-speaker JBL premium audio, head-up display, panoramic glass roof, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and auto-parking assist.

Why hybrid only?

Toyota Australia dropped the petrol-only Camry in 2024 in response to consistent buyer preference for the hybrid variant. Hybrid Camrys made up over 95% of Camry sales in Australia in the year before the petrol model was discontinued. Combined with the federal NVES (New Vehicle Efficiency Standard) coming into effect in January 2025, keeping a thirstier petrol-only Camry would have hurt Toyota's fleet emissions average.

At 4.0 L/100km combined, the Camry Hybrid is one of the cheapest cars to fuel in Australia — about $1,140 a year at 15,000 km / year and $1.90/L unleaded. That is comparable to the much smaller Toyota Corolla Hybrid.

Is there a Camry EV?

No. There is no Toyota Camry EV in Australia, and Toyota has never built one. Some buyers searching "Camry EV" are confusing hybrid with EV. The Camry Hybrid runs on petrol with electric assist; you fill it up like any other petrol car. It does not plug in.

If you want a fully electric Toyota in Australia, the options are the Toyota bZ4X SUV or the new bZ4X Touring wagon (arriving May 2026). Both are mid-size body shapes, neither is a sedan in the Camry's mould.

How it compares to rivals

At $39,990 RRP, the Camry Ascent Hybrid undercuts the Honda Accord Hybrid e:HEV ($57,900 RRP for the RS) and the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid (no longer sold in Australia). Within Toyota's own lineup, the Camry costs less than the RAV4 Hybrid ($45,990) and is roughly $4,000 more than the Corolla Sedan Hybrid.
