Every SUV in Australia Ranked by Boot Space

Written by Uzzi · 3 April 2026

Share

Boot space is the SUV spec buyers check last and argue about first, and it is the spec where brochure numbers are least comparable: two SUVs quoting the same litres can be measured to different fill lines by different methods. This page lists the boot volume we hold for every SUV on Australian sale, split into three size bands by length, seats up and seats down. Every figure is read live from our database each time the page rebuilds, so it matches the car pages it links to rather than a number typed in once and left behind. For cars, wagons, coupes and people movers, see the companion boot space by segment page.

Read this before you read the tables

A boot litre is not a fixed unit. Most Australian brochures use the VDA method, where one-litre blocks are stacked to the top of the rear seat backs. Some use SAE, which fills to a different line. Some publish a load-to-the-roof figure, which is much larger for the same physical boot. Of the 237 SUV nameplates below, only 34 record which standard their figure uses, drawn from 124 car rows whose source document names it. The rest do not say, and no honest ranking can be built across an unstated basis. The tables are sorted by the published figure, biggest first, so you can find an SUV rather than crown a winner. A 20-litre gap between two SUVs that do not name their method is noise. A 200-litre gap is real.

The seats-down column has a second problem on top of that. Folded volume depends on where the manufacturer stops measuring and on whether the seats fold flat, so two SUVs with the same folded litres can swallow very different loads. It is also the number nobody publishes: 61 of 237 nameplates here have one, about 26 per cent. Where it is missing the cell says No data, never an estimate, and the SUV keeps its place in the table.

4 nameplates publish no seats-up figure at all in the Australian documents we hold: Chery Tiggo 7, Forthing Taikon 5, GMC Yukon, Jaguar F-PACE. They are listed with the cell marked No data, because showing the gap is more useful than hiding the car.

The size bands

Bands are vehicle length, printed under each heading, so you can check where any SUV falls rather than take our word for which one is "medium". 233 of 237 nameplates publish a seats-up figure. EVs are tagged, and a front boot is noted separately rather than folded into the total. A band needs a length: where we hold none for a variant it borrows its siblings', and an SUV with no length at all gets a table of its own at the end rather than disappearing. 3 nameplates appear in two bands, because their variants sit either side of a band line: Jeep Wrangler, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Porsche Macan. Each entry carries only the variants that belong to that band.

Small SUVs

SUVs under 4,400mm long.

44 nameplates on sale. 44 publish a seats-up figure we can cite, 14 publish a seats-down one. Only 14 record which standard the figure uses (VDA). The rest sit on an unstated basis, so read what follows as a list you can find a car in rather than a ranking, and treat small gaps as noise. A range means the nameplate's variants differ, usually a spare wheel, a hybrid battery or a third row.

Mid-size SUVs

SUVs from 4,400mm to 4,799mm long, the band most Australian families shop.

117 nameplates on sale. 114 publish a seats-up figure we can cite, 24 publish a seats-down one. Only 12 record which standard the figure uses (VDA). A range means the nameplate's variants differ, usually a spare wheel, a hybrid battery or a third row.

Not classified by length

SUVs we hold no length for, so they cannot be placed in a size band. They are listed here rather than dropped.

1 nameplate on sale. 1 publishes a seats-up figure we can cite, 0 publish a seats-down one. Not one of them records which standard the figure uses, so read what follows as a list you can find a car in rather than a ranking, and treat small gaps as noise. A range means the nameplate's variants differ, usually a spare wheel, a hybrid battery or a third row.

What the numbers actually tell you

Three patterns survive the measurement noise. The first is that size band beats badge only loosely: the biggest small SUV boot on the page, the Skoda Karoq at 521 L, out-carries 75 of the mid-size nameplates below it, so a shorter car is not automatically a smaller boot. The second is that a six or seven seat SUV quotes a number most owners never see, because the brochure figure is usually taken with the last row folded. With every row in use, 5 of them here drop below 150 L, which is a school bag and a shopping bag, the smallest being the GWM Tank 500 at 98 L. The third is that folding the rear seats roughly triples the space in a five-seat SUV: across the 39 five-seat nameplates that publish both figures the median is 3.0 times, but the multiple runs from 1.8 times (Suzuki Vitara) to 4.8 times (Geely Starray EM-i), so it is not a rule you can apply to an SUV whose folded figure is missing.

The practical test is not litres at all. It is whether the boot floor is long enough, wide enough between the arches and tall enough under the parcel shelf for the thing you actually carry, which is why a 400-litre boot can fail on a pram that a 380-litre boot swallows. Use litres to build a shortlist, then check the shape.

Compare two SUVs properly

Once two or three are on your shortlist, put them side by side, where boot volume sits next to rear legroom, kerb weight, price and running costs.

Boot volumes are manufacturer-published figures held against each car in our database, read live at build time from the 845 on-sale SUV rows this page covers. Where a manufacturer document names the measurement standard it is shown; where it does not, the basis is unstated and figures should not be compared closely. No figure on this page is estimated, converted or inferred, and SUVs with no published figure are listed with the gap visible rather than removed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which SUV has the biggest boot in Australia?
It depends which size of SUV you are shopping, and the honest answer is that the published figures do not sit on a common basis, so the order is a guide rather than a verdict. Among SUVs under 4,400mm the Skoda Karoq publishes the largest seats-up figure at 521 L. Among 4,400mm to 4,799mm SUVs it is the Land Rover Defender 110 at up to 972 L, with the Land Rover Discovery Sport at 897 L, the Volkswagen Tayron at 885 L and the Tesla Model Y at 854 L behind it. Among SUVs 4,800mm and over the Land Rover Defender 130 publishes up to 1,329 L. Only a minority of these figures name the method they were measured by, so treat a small gap between two SUVs as noise.
Does Toyota publish a boot space figure for the RAV4?
Not in the Australian spec documents we hold. All eleven on-sale RAV4 variants carry no boot volume in our database, seats up or seats down, which is unusual for the best-selling SUV in the country. The RAV4 still appears in the mid-size table on this page with the cell marked No data, because dropping the car would be more misleading than showing the gap. If Toyota Australia publishes a figure in a later spec table it will appear here automatically.
What does VDA mean on a boot space figure?
VDA is the German motor industry association method: the boot is filled with 200mm x 100mm x 50mm blocks, one litre each, up to the top of the rear seat backs or the parcel shelf. It is the most common basis in Australian brochures, but it is not the only one. SAE measurement uses different blocks and a different fill line, and some brands publish a load-to-the-roof figure instead, which is much larger for the same car. Australian brochures often print the number without naming the method, which is why this page shows the standard only where the manufacturer actually records it.
Why are seats-down boot figures missing for so many SUVs?
Because most Australian brochures do not print one. The seats-up number is the marketing number and it appears everywhere; the folded number is the one you actually use when you move house, and manufacturers are much less consistent about publishing it. Where an SUV has no published figure this page shows No data rather than estimating it, because a folded volume cannot be derived from a seats-up volume.
How big is the boot in a seven-seat SUV with all three rows up?
Much smaller than the headline number suggests, because the headline number is usually quoted with the third row folded. With all rows in use the GWM Tank 500 publishes 98 L, the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max and Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid 117 L, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 131 L, the Chery Tiggo 9 Super Hybrid 143 L and the Denza B8 147 L. That is roughly two airline carry-on bags. If you carry seven people regularly, the last-row figure is the one that decides whether the SUV works, not the five-seat figure on the brochure cover.
Do EV frunks count as boot space?
Not in these tables. Where a manufacturer publishes a front boot volume we show it as a separate note under the car name rather than adding it to the rear boot, because a frunk holds charge cables and a soft bag, not a suitcase, and adding the two makes an EV look larger than it packs. Treat a frunk as useful extra storage, not as boot litres.
How much boot space do I need for a pram?
There is no published figure for a pram, so we will not print one as though there were. What we can say from the tables is that the spread inside a single SUV size band is enormous: among small SUVs the published seats-up figures run from 85 L to 521 L, so two cars that look the same size in a car park can differ by six times in what they hold. The practical test is not litres at all. Take the pram to the dealer folded, and check it fits behind the parcel shelf with the boot floor in its normal position, because a boot that only swallows it with the floor lowered will not swallow it with shopping as well.
