Ford Australia now has two F-150s wearing a Black Edition badge, and they could hardly be more different deals. One is a well-equipped 2025 model year XLT with a drive-away price on it. The other is a 2023 model year Lariat in black-out trim, sold through dealers in limited numbers with no price on Ford's page, alongside an $8K discount on the rest of Ford's MY23 F-150 stock. If you're shopping a full-size pickup this spring, the model year on the paperwork matters more than the paint.

Offers: the XLT Black Edition price is Ford's recommended drive-away at participating dealers for private, Blue, Silver, Gold and Platinum business fleet, government and demonstrator customers; Ford may vary it at any time. The $8K MY23 offers run at participating dealers until the last unit is sold, for private, Blue, Silver and Gold business fleet and on-sold demonstrator customers; the Lariat offer can't be combined with any other. Ford separately lists a $4K fuel card on 2024MY F-150 XLT, Lariat and Platinum models.
The MY25 XLT Black Edition
Ford's spec sheet lists the XLT Black Edition on the short 145-inch wheelbase with the 5.5-foot box. It runs the 3.5-litre EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 (298kW and 678Nm on Ford's overseas SAE figures) through a 10-speed auto, with a 136-litre tank and 13.4L/100km on the combined cycle. It's rated to tow 4,500kg braked, with a 4.5-tonne tow bar, a 70mm ball, an integrated trailer brake controller and Pro Trailer Back-up Assist. Kerb weight is 2,462kg and payload 853kg, against a 3,315kg GVM and a 7,365kg GCM.
The black bits are the 20-inch gloss black wheels, a black painted grille with black mesh, black mirrors and black wheel-well liners. Worth knowing before you picture a fully blacked-out truck: the sheet still lists a chrome grille centre bar, chrome door handles, a chrome front bumper and a chrome exhaust tip. The useful stuff is inside: heated 12-way power front seats, 400W (230V) outlets in the tray and the back of the console, wireless charging, front and rear sensors, a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise and dual 12-inch screens. Ford also launches a new Atlas Blue paint with it. Worth knowing too: Ford's F-150 page says a facelifted F-150 range arrives in 2026, with redesigned grilles, headlamps and wheels.

The MY23 Lariat Black Edition
Ford describes this one as the MY23 F-150 Lariat LWB with chrome swapped for black: black grille, black bumpers front and rear, black door handles, black grained mirror caps and 20-inch gloss black alloys, plus F-150 bonnet decals and a black tailgate decal. It's sold in what Ford calls strictly limited numbers, and Ford's page doesn't print a price, so you'll be getting a number from the dealer.
There's one line on Ford's page you should not skim past: "Side mirror integrated indicator, daytime running lamps and rear facing white lamps are not operational." Ford's offers footnotes carry similar notes for the other MY23 trucks: the side mirror indicator lamps on the XLT LWB, the lower daytime running lamps on the Lariat SWB, and both on the Lariat LWB. Ford doesn't say why. Ask the dealer to show you, in writing, what is disconnected on the exact truck you're buying.
Our Take: What "MY23" Actually Means in 2026
A 2023 model year truck bought new in late 2026 is still a new car, but a few things follow it around. Here's what Ford's own documents tell us, and what they don't.
- Warranty starts when you take delivery. Ford's F-150 page says its 7-year conditional warranty applies to new and demonstrator vehicles delivered from 1 September 2026, with all services done at a Ford dealer, and the warranty period starts on the delivery date. The exception is a demonstrator, where it starts on the date the dealer first registered it. So a new MY23 isn't short-changed on warranty, but an on-sold demo might be.
- Capped-price servicing is shorter. Ford's service price guide caps a MY2023 F-150 at $429 per service for the first four general services over 4 years or 60,000km. From MY2024 it's the same $429 cap, but for five services over 5 years or 75,000km. That's one fewer capped service on the older truck.
- The model year doesn't change. The truck will be a 2023 model year on its paperwork whenever you register it, and a future buyer will see that. We don't hold resale data that would let us put a dollar figure on it, so we won't.
- What we can't know from Ford's material: the build month of a given truck, how long it has been in storage, and why its lamps are disconnected. Those are dealer questions, and they're worth asking before the $8K does the talking.
Put simply, the MY25 XLT Black Edition is the straightforward buy: a newer model year, a printed drive-away price, five capped services and no lighting caveats. The MY23 trucks can make sense if the dealer's final number is sharp enough to cover the shorter service plan and you're happy with exactly what's working on the truck in front of you. For safety, our directory holds no ANCAP rating for the F-150, so ANCAP: no data. Our F-150 safety tech piece covers what the trucks do carry.
